We are committed to the long term care of each of our horses and other babies that arrive at Villa. We will care for them until the end of their days. This philosophy leads us to have many elderly animals. Many of which need either short term or long term medical care.
Our medical expenses for 2012 were $19,403, in 2013 $23,875 and in 2014 we are headed for around $30,000. Our vet is Dr. Tad Bender, and he is excellent. As kind as he is, he, nor any vet we have used over the past 10 years, is able to donate their services or medication.
We have horses with tumors on their spines, neurological disorders, cancer, broken tail bones, lower spinal injuries, Cushing's disease in addition to the ongoing extreme arthritis cases, colics, intestinal problems and other issues. This is why we are a special needs sanctuary.
Daily medical supplies used in the barn include disinfectants, gauze, syringes, wraps for legs, ointments for arthritis and bute (pain medication).
Bart Star suffers from asthma and requires veterinary visits when he has an attack. Pumkin, Lucky Lady, Surprise, Lacey and others all have Cushing's disease. This is an ongoing illness that cannot be cured, but the symptoms can subside with ongoing medication. The cost of this medication for the multiple horses on it is about $800 a month.
Your help with unexpected and on-going medical expenses and supplies will help keep all our horses healthy and comfortable here at Villa Chardonnay.
