Why Are They Here?

"Show me your horse and I will tell you what you are."
English Proverb

The horses of Villa Chardonnay arrive here for a variety of reasons. These are the horses in the most precarious positions—they are often lame, cannot be ridden, elderly, or too sick to be wanted or adopted. In todays down economy, only the healthiest horses can bring an appropriate price tag. What was once a "good" horse is now considered "not adoptable". By offering these horses sanctuary, they are no longer in jeopardy of being moved again and again often culminating in a bitter end to their lives.

It is impossible to take in all the horses that seek a home at Villa Chardonnay and some are turned away. If a horse is young, healthy and can be ridden it is not necessarily a good candidate for sanctuary so we will send it to another rescue that focuses on adoption.

So how do our horses end up here?
